At some point in the last two months, WordPress has stopped generating different image sizes when I upload an image. I just realized this now, no idea why this hasn’t come up earlier.

When I now upload an image, I can no longer pick any size other than the full size. This is also true for images from the last two months or so. Images before then still have their different sizes available.

I have no idea what could have caused this. I keep updating my version of WordPress pretty much when a new one comes out, so I wonder if this is a 3.9 or 3.9.1 issue. I haven’t made any changes to my server that I can remember, and I’m not seeing any error messages in the log.

Is there a way to debug this? I first suspected the WP Retina plugin, but deactivating that makes no difference. Anything else I could try?

  • Okay, turns out php-gd was missing. I had not remembered that I actually set up a new VPS about two months ago because of issues with the old one.

It would be helpful if WP would complain if something like this was missing, though.
