    Hi,

    a WordPress blog on the London bombing http://www.werenotafraid.com has been slashdotted without the slash dot. They’ve had 294 gigs of bandwidth used up and 4 million hits so far, and they need some sponsorship to cover the bandwidth, which was around £1500 a month so far. Alfie Dennen, the creator of the site who has 6 friends helping him round the clock has been interviewed on CNN, BBC, the Guardian newspaper etc.

    “Show the world that we’re not afraid of what happened in London, and that the world is a better place without fear.

    It’s more about “we’re not afraid� and less about “bring em on�. See the distinction?

    Great site, great messages, great photos, great WordPress blog. There are 1,000 photos up so far from all corners of the globe. Quite inspirational. The purpose of terrorism is to terrorize. This blog is an antidote to that fear. I’’ve posted a pic and would encourage people to do the same.

    To put the 4 million hits in perspective, the Daily Kos blog, one of the top 3 blogs in the blogosphere ranked by the number of incoming links on the Truth Laid Bare blog ecosystem has an average of 537,037 hits per day. I don’t know if it’s 4 million unique hits or 4 million page views, but however you count it, that’s a hell of a lot of traffic.

    So if any wordpress bloggers here know of a company who might want to sponsor the bandwidth cost on this blog for next month (this month was covered by their server), and get some good Karma built up and have your logo viewed by a couple of million eyeballs, please contact Alfie at his home blog http://www.al4ie.com.

    Just found out they have a Cafe Press site.

    They just started a cafepress site to sell we’re not afraid tshirts and bags. Half the profits earned from the sale of this merchandise will be allocated to server costs. The other half will be donated to the Red Cross London Bomb Relief Fund.

    I don’t know how much of the bandwidth those sales will cover so I’m hoping someone who either has a good heart or has a good marketing/PR sense or both will sponsor the blog so they’ll be able to keep up the WP blog and all of the donations go to the Red Cross London Bomb Relief Fund.

    It’s not a business. It’s a blog marketing courage and hope instead of fear, anxiety, and powerless paralysis like so many in the media are doing. They’re raising funds for the Red Cross London Bomb Relief Fund. They’re also volunterring their time.

    I’ve sent emails to more than a hundred bloggers telling them about what they site is doing and asking if they know if anyone will sponsor the site and if they don’t know anyone to ask people on their blog.

    Could you put the request for sponsorship on your blog or website and email your friends to ask them to do so too if you feel it’s a good cause?

    Ummm, it’s either a business, a non-profit (still a business), or a complete money suck. If it’s looking for sponsors, it’s not a money suck, it’s a business or not-for-profit.

    I understand people doing things on their own time, for no compensation, but the underlying entity (the site) has taken on a life of its own.

    If the blog is getting such coverage that they are getting linked from major media outlets, that one of the creator guys is getting interviewed on major televised news shows, I hope >they< are spreading the word themselves. Why haven’t they gone to one of the larger web hosts in the UK and asked for the head of marketing, and see if the company is willing to take a major ad space on the site in return for hosting? That’s not something that’s just going to appear — unless a hosting provider marketing guy happens to consider it. 😉

    Hey guys – let’s not argue over what they are or aren’t. Let’s just do what WE individually can do to help, whether it’s donate direct to any of a number of relief funds, or post up links etc, or comb our addy books for potential sponsors.

    Rhetoric has a place, but I’m not sure this is it…. and yes, this is simply a personal opinion….

    For those who want to help, they’ve just put up some buttons of various sizes for use on your blog or website, simply saying werenotafraid. It’s at the bottom of their home page.

    Also if you’ve ever wanted to say we’re not afraid in several dozen languages they’re posted on the home page too.

    Seconded. Instead of saying ‘isn’t it great that these people chose WP for a worthy project that’s getting worldwide media exposure, we should help out however we can’ people are bitching and whining and doubting the validity of the original poster’s request. Don’t you realise every visitor to the site would have seen that it was powered by wordpress? Isn’t that worth anything, even goodwill? I knew wordpressers were allergic to anything remotely resembling a request for money, but some of the comments here leave a very nasty taste in my mouth.

    (Yes, I am British, and no, I probably shouldn’t have added to this thread, but the cynicism of some of the posts here just astounds me.)

    A link is great.

    They found a sponsor for the site which is now getting 4 million hits A DAY.

    There are 1213 blogs that linked to “http://www.werenotafraid.com&#8221; list at http://www.blogsnow.com/bnxzq4766030

    The site has inspired people to create songs + short movies and they’ll be doing multimedia and have a section for celebrities. They’ve received 11,000 photos so far and have about 2,500 up.

    Thanks to those who helped promote the site.

    Redbus their new sponsor starting August got a good deal. for about $2450 US a month give or take they got an exclusive ad on a blog getting 4 million hits a day. the 3rd ranking blog on technorati is daily Kos and it cost $16,000 a month to be 1 ad out of 8 on a site that gets a daily average of 552,923 hits.

    may be I’m too old for this enthusiasm.
    I’ts wonderful and great, that so many people link to this blog, wonderful, that the create songs and t-shirt …

    but…to promote this site is it really a way to stop terrorists?

    sons, daughters, fathers and mums are dead…

    and we promote a weblog…

    tears for links?

    only puzzles of thoughts, because I can’t explain it better in english

    So what are YOU doing instead of just complaining?

    Terrorist of all stripes depend of public fear. They’re killing innocent civilians to provoke fear in order to get the govt to do something they want that they couldn’t get done by getting public support. Mass murder for political ends.

    This blog is promoting individual courage, and fearlessness without going to the “nuke em till they glow” viewpoint. The opposite of what the terrorists want, they want individuals to be afraid of them. They’re not planning on invading and occupying the UK and the USA. The want certain objectives and their strategy is to do targeted mass murder for media consumption world wide to increase public fear and anxiety to get those objectives met. My country Canada is on the list and we and Italy are the only one’s on the list that haven’t been bombed.

    Even if you don’t like Tony Blair, read his latest speech(the 2nd one) it explains it well.

    The We’re Not Afraid Blog is not the only solution, or the perfect solution, it is one solution that everyone can participate if they want. I could get into a long political rant here on what else might need to be done, but I won’t.

    There’s been 11,000 people sending in pictures around the world it must have struck a nerve with the public. 4 million hits a day means it must be something people want to look at.

    You might come up with an equally good or even better idea, and if you do that’s great, I’ll blog about it too and encourage others to do the same.

    addcoach – with respect, I think this thread has moved way too far from the purpose of the original post. That post was a yell for help (which I answered) and right now the guys are working with a script I gave them. They have had all the help we can give right now, and it looks like they have got themselves a solution all worked out.
    That is a good thing.

    But this is now getting overtly political and this forum is not the place for that. I’m closing this thread and I hope you understand.
