Support » Localhost Installs » WP local installation recovery after system crash

  • Hey,
I don’t know how to make my site work again after unexpected system crash.
I had it installed locally (Windows, xampp). I also had Avada theme and it was all working fine. After a critical system error I obviously lost the files that were on C: but I have an automatic cloud backup so I managed to download all my lost C drive. However I don’t know how to set things up again. I reinstalled xampp but copying htdocs content does no good to me.
Any ideas how to make it work?
Just for clarity, I didn’t export any data from wordpress nor did any backup on purpose. Just have the whole folder structer that was on my C drive
    Thanks

  • Hi @numnah13,
Without the database you will need to start from scratch … the lesson here is always back up everything to a different location (Google or Dropbox) … sorry for the bad news

If you had saved the database you could do the following:
Create a new localsite, upload you saved SQL database, if the naming is different for the database, change it in the wp-config
Replace your wp-content with your backed up version

    Hey Frank,
    Thanks for a quick answer.
I actually have all my machine backed up on Backblaze, so I felt pretty safe. But now it seems, if you don’t export the database to a certain format, any automatic backup won’t help. Is that right?
But it’s frustrating, I have literally everything but it doesn’t want to work as it did. Why is that? Or am I a total noob (which is possible) and can’t see an obvious solution.

If you have a backup of the Xampp installation, you should be able to restore your database by copying the MySQL/MariaDB data directory to a new location, and editing your MySQL/mariaDB configuration to point to the restored data directory. But that’s for a non-control-panel MySQL installation; the procedure for Xampp may be different.

It would be worth taking a look at the Xampp Support Forum. You aren’t the first person who has had to recover from a system crash, and there is a good chance you’ll find the procedure you need to recover your database in Xampp.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
