WP is Creating Many Many Image Duplicates? Why?

Hi, it appears that when I add an image to WordPress it is duplicating it. Here is the HTML code that was generated when I uploaded an image into a page.<img class=”alignnone size-full wp-image-660″ title=”mugshot” src=”http://myURL/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/mugshot.png” alt=”” width=”73″ height=”129″ />

I went to (WP > Dashboard > Media) and delted any images I wasn’t using but then when I looked on the server in the folder [b][color=#0000FF](public_html > wp-content > uploads > 2011 > 05)[/color][/b] there are tons of images there (looks like duplicates) and it appears like it is making many different sizes for each image and I didn’t do that that. What’s going on?
