# WP Install w/o remote server? (Read: Localhost)

 * I’d like to design my own wordpress theme, but don’t want to install WP on a 
   remote server and deal with the FTP upload of changes, etc.
 * I figure I’m going to need:
    1. web server software 2. sql server software 3.
   php software
 * Can anyone point me in the direction of what I need on a Windows XP machine to
   essentially do my work as [http://localhost/](http://localhost/) instead?

 * The usual solution is XAMPP, which is an all-in package. I prefer this one that
   Podz suggests:
 *  [http://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/usb/](http://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/usb/)
 * It doesn’t have to go on a memory stick – it’s just as happy on a hard drive.
   No real installation, works nicely.
 * (Just noticed there are two on offer now – I use the first one, WOS.)
