• I hope somone can help me with this…
I am trying to install WP on my server at Dreamhost. I copied everything to the server exactly as WP unzipped (ie folders the same and everything) When I use the quick set-up to make the wp-config file, I can get through that, where it says “You have successfuly created the file, now run the install. When I run the install, i get the error:
Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_STRING in /home/.napoleon/ljhart/ljhart.com/tests/wordpress-1[1].2-mingus/wordpress/wp-config.php on line 9
I haven’t changed anything in this file, and I belive I chose the right database host. My config settings are:
    database name: unplugged
    user name: dariaknits
    password: password
    database host mysql.ljhart.com
    tableprefix: wp_
Can someone who has set up WP on Dreamhost please help me? I would be eternally greatful.

  • Have you tried creating the file ‘wp-config.php’ then uploading that, rather than having the program create it for you online ?

See my reply in the other thread you posted in.
You can now edit the wp-config.php file wordpress created for you, checking for errors as mentioned in the other reply I posted.

I did try to manually create the file, but the install wouldn’t recognise it, no matter which folder it was it. Which folder should it be it? The main one, or the admin folder?
I think my main problem would be that I wouldn’t know an error if it slapped me upside the head and spit on my shoes. I am slowly learning PhP, but my book is at home, and my fast internet conection is at work.

Can someone send me the config file, not saved as a php file? When I open up the default one to be changed (in notepad) I get a bucnh of funky characters, and I am afraid to touch anything or delete the spacer squares, because I have no idea how it should look formated.

Hi, I am using WP on DreamHost. I had some glitches along the way, but not this one.
Contact me at ruby at lotusmedia dot org and I can send you some of my files…

Actually, don’t bother contacting me right now as DreamHost has completely bunged up my primary e-mail account. Grrrrrr. New “feature” my ass.

Did you try my instructions for installing WordPress at Dreamhost?
A common problem that people run into is unzipping the files on a Windows PC and then FTP’ing them to their server in binary mode rather than ASCII mode. This results in end of line characters getting mangled.
If your FTP program doesn’t automatically detect that a .PHP file should be transferred in ASCII mode, that could be your problem.
