Support » Plugin: WP Google Maps » WP Google Maps kind of resets my iPhone

Hi, I’m thinking about purchasing WP Google Maps Pro. However, testing the demo Store Locator (https://www.wpgmaps.com/demo/store-locator/) at my iPhone gives me a kind of reset of the iPhone. After entering a ZIP code (e.g. 6369 cw for a village in The Netherlands, or 5283 gd for a village in The Netherlands, or 54403 for Wausau near Wisconsin US) and pressing the search button, 8 out of 10 times my iPhone screen goes black, shows the Apple logo, and starts up again. I don’t have issues on the desktop.

I have an iPhone 6S, using iOS 11.0.2

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

    Hi Marc

Thank you for reporting this, my sincere apologies for the delay in responding.

We are looking into this as a matter of urgency, I believe this may be something to do with the canvas layers used by our modern store locator not being well supported on iOS,

We’re trying to reproduce this at our end to confirm the cause and will patch as soon as possible.

Thank you for your time in this matter, I’ll update you as soon as I can.

    Kind regards
    – Perry

Hi Perry, thnx for the reply mate, very much appreciated.

Good to know it’s treated as a matter of urgency; guess you have been able to experience the issue at iPhone or iPad already?

Looking forward to an update, since the plugin looks very promising, and I’d like to use it for a very important project of mine 😉

    Cheers mate, enjoy the weekend!

    Hi Perry,

    This article drew my attention:
    https://www.zdnet.com/article/nasty-piece-of-css-code-crashes-and-restarts-iphones/

I don’t think you guys are trying to use nasty code, not at all. But since the article says ‘…crashes and restarts iphones’ I had to think back to what happened to my iPhone when using WP Google Maps: it also crashed and restarted. So same kind of problem. May be same kind of cause?

I’m not a coder, so may be this article does not have anything to do with the problem we’re facing with WP Google Maps; but just wanted to give you the info 😉

    Hi Marc

This article is describing a method of attack – it’s deliberately malicious code.

We, of course, would never include any such code in our plugin, deliberately or otherwise, everything is checked and reviewed before release by myself and the other Lead Developers 🙂

None the less the article was a fascinating read, I looked at the code and what they are doing is nesting hundreds of elements with a (very computationally expensive and dependant) blur filter applied. I didn’t click the link but I can see how that would work!

I think this might be something to do with the Canvas Layer we use to draw the modern store locator circle. It’s certainly not as computationally expensive as the setup described in that article, but have been issues surrounding the canvas API on iOS devices in the past that may have resurfaced.

May I ask you to please check this page and see if the same thing happens?

It may be that we need to prevent the modern style store locator circle from being used for iOS devices.

Does that page work as you would expect?

    Kind regards

    Hi Perry,

Testing the page you mentioned (https://www.wpgmaps.com/demo/wp-google-maps-store-locator-free-version/) everything works like a charm; can’t make the thing crash 😉

Did the testing on an iPad. The page I mentioned in my first message here (https://www.wpgmaps.com/demo/store-locator/) makes my iPad crash all the time…

    Hi Perry,

Don’t want to add pressure, but do you have any idea when this issue might be solved?

I need to start a very, very important web project for a big city in The Netherlands, where the map options are 50% of the website’s functionality. So just wondering, how save is it to start WP Google Maps and trust it will work within a few days (max weeks)?

Once again, please don’t feel attacked or pressured, it’s just I want to offer my client something that will work.

    Cheers mate!

    Hi Marc

My apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

We’ve added code to prevent the modern store locator from being used on iOS devices. The issue should be solved if you update to 7.10.35.

Could you please try that and confirm?

    Kind regards
    – Perry

Hi Perry, no worries mate! 😉

Just tried the Store Locator at your demo site (https://www.wpgmaps.com/demo/store-locator/) on my iPhone, and it seems to do a nice job!

I’ll do some more tests tonight (both on iPhone and iPad), and let you know what happens.

    For now: thnx!
    Marc
