We recently read some comms from WP Engine re: their roll-out of PHP 7.4 which included some information about them deprecating the .htaccess file – https://wpengine.co.uk/support/htaccess-deprecation/.

Whilst this isn’t going to cause too many issues we think it will most definitely effect this plugin if you host with them. Is anyone able to tell me if there are any plans to change the way “hardening” works (or potential workaround) in the plugin so that it doesn’t use .htaccess to make it work?

I realise this is a very niche problem and only relevant for those hosting with WP Engine but any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    Best regards.

    Behrooz.

I’ve had a response from the support chaps at WP Engine, here is what it says:

    • A lot of premium plugins will have compatibility with different server systems, so should be able to default to NGINX if it detects it.
    • A lot of the rules that are added by plugins are things that we have built in natively (Yoast SEO Redirects -> User Portal Redirects, WP Rocket GZIP Compress -> Already Default on WP Engine servers).
    • Some do not have either situations applied, which is where you can work with us and our support team to build NGINX rules to replace it.

Can anyone confirm or deny if the Sucuri plugin detects and uses NGINX instead?
