    Hi there,

I’m using a child theme of Twenty Twelve and I thought I’d check my page load times with Google PageSpeed Insights (in Webmaster tools). It showed that quite a basic page with about 7 images in, was actually loading a HUGE amount of extra images from the wp-content/uploads/ directory, even though they had nothing to do with that page. And this is the same for all of my pages!

    Examples below:
    /wp-content/uploads/2012/01/AA00542.jpg
    /wp-content/uploads/2013/01/AA00543.jpg
    /wp-content/uploads/2014/01/AA00544.jpg …etc.

Does anyone know why this is happening, as I’m sure it can’t be the right way for pages to load? Or how to fix this?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, as I can’t find any info about this in the forums.

  • Do you have a link I can take a look at? I would be easier to find this issue…

yup, this is the eg page from above: http://trevorpenfold.com/hzp-group/
    Thanks.

I have had a look into this further for you.

Firstly, I can’t seem to find the images you discussed on all of the pages. I have done a quick search in the code and also on Google’s PageSpeed Insights.

However, with that being said, I know the main cause of the speed of the website, is down to the images within the dropdown navigation.

The website is loading the full sized images, on every page load.

I am not certain how this has been developed, however those images need to be cropped. For example, one of the images being used in the navigation is calling the full size image like this – http://trevorpenfold.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/AA-05403.jpg

Try cropping all of those images to the correct size and this should help with some of the load speed issues (I think there will be further after this though).

Let me know how you get on.

Thanks for looking at this for me – I had completely forgotten about the tiny thumbnail images in the menu! And I’d just assumed they’d be cropped really small anyway. So I’ll look at resizing all of them when I have a spare hour or so and will report back. I’ll also contact the ubermenu creator and see if there’s a way for his menu to downsize images automatically in the future.

    many thanks.

OK, resized all my images for my menu to exact size (25 x 25px) and compressed for web, and page load much improved. I’m also using another image-heavy plugin so will have to review the whole site for this, but at least i now know where to go.
    Many thanks for your help.
