After a backup with Updraft on my website I received the following warning:

wp-config.php has a “byte order mark” (BOM) at the beginning.

I have read the note at the link https://updraftplus.com/problems-with-extra-white-space/ but I can’t find any error in the wp-config.php file

    What can I do?
I would appreciate a tip because I want to continue doing the backups with Updraft. But with this warning it is not reliable.
    Thanks for help!

    Hi,

By default, UpdraftPlus does not backup the wp-config.php. Please see FAQ: https://updraftplus.com/faqs/what-exactly-does-updraftplus-back-up/

    Best Wishes,

    Hi,

However, the warning “wp-config.php has a “byte order mark” (BOM) at the beginning” appears under the Updraft plugin after a backup.

Is there any way to check the wp-config file for blank lines?
    Thanks for help

A byte-order-mark isn’t a blank line. It’s an invisible character added by a text editor at the very first byte of a file to indicate the file’s encoding. You can’t see it by inspecting visually – but it’s there.

To remove it, you should open it in a text editor which you have configured to *not* save byte order marks, and re-save it.

Thank you for the good explanations. Thanks to your information I was able to solve the problem with the Notepad editor by choosing the encoding “UTF-8 without BOM”. Now the warning on the website has disappeared. Everything is fine!

    Greetings
