Support » Everything else WordPress » WP as CMS for a media-heavy (image/video) membership site? Limitations?

  • I collect and restore antique photos & film and am planning to use WordPress as a CMS for this substantial collection on the web.

Have a theme heavily customized with a few plugins to do the job (NextGen gallery modified to suit my needs, among others), cosmetically it’s all starting to come together. I’ve tried to keep it as lean as possible. But I have questions about WordPress’s inherent ability to handle this sort of project.

There will be thousands of images and ultimately thousands of film clips as well. Can anyone give me a heads-up about what kind of issues I might face incorporating all this material into the CMS? Can the database(s) handle it?

And what about security? This will be a paid subscription site due to the bandwidth costs involved – I already have a payment processor and a password-protected members area, but does WordPress present any vulnerabilities not found in regular old HTML?

Basically, I have it looking good but am wondering whether WP is robust and/or secure enough to handle my project… any insight would be much appreciated!

  • Bump.
Anyone want to field this? Or am I asking in the wrong section?

I don’t see any issue from the WP side when it comes to using a plethora of media. You should check with your hosting service though since it’s going to be a resource drain on that end.

Sorry, I can’t answer the security question.
