The update downed by site, only showing a blank page with text stating “This service is unavailable.”
WP-Admin went back up for me stating the plugin was deactivated/removed automatically.
FYI: The message went away but stated it was missing a file, wordpress-seo.php I think.

Same issue here. But I could easily fix this by restarting my caching and PHP layers on the server (memcached + php5-fpm).
So if you encounter a problem, reset your caching or – if you don’t have access – restart the whole server.
Same issue here. I’m on WP Engine hosting and a cache empty is fixed the problem.
Ditto here on WP Engine – I have had to manually clear cache on ALL my clients sites. Whats interesting is that once done the Plugin would install/update ok but would NOT activate. I have to Manually Disable Object/Transient Cache – Clear Cache again before WP SEO would activate.
I have also reported this reported this to WP Engine as well so they can keep an eye on this for future issues. WAY too many bugs on updates this last year…
The new update of Yoast solved this issue.
