Support » Fixing WordPress » WP Admin not updating

  • Hi

My developer is on holiday and I am having some issues with the admin account of our WP website.

I have added new posts and set them to appear under a menu heading. In the admin site, this looks exactly how I want it to look. However, it does not update on the live site.

Any ideas how to get these posts to appear on the live site??

    Thanks 🙂

  • You’re using the menu builder under Appearance > Menus to add them?

It sounds like your site may have some sort of caching plugin installed. Basically it helps your site to load faster but means things don’t update quite as fast.

If you can leave a link to the site we should be able to tell which plugin it is, otherwise look in your admin panel for any settings links with “cache” in the title and find a “clear cache” button.

Yes I am. I have done it before successfully so I don’t think it is user error…

    The site is http://www.callscripter.com/

We do have a cache plugin which I have tried emptying but has not worked.

    Thank you

Ok there are two things I would try first off:

    1) If it is a caching problem, emptying your browser cache could also help move things along. You can try completely disabling the caching plugin briefly as well, just to rule that out, but that’s covered in idea 2).

    2) It’s possible your developer installed or updated a plugin recently that is causing an issue. Disable all plugins briefly and see if the problem persists, if not you can reactivate them one by one to find the culprit.

Oh, another thought. Are you adding the new menu items at the same depth as previous ones? For example I can see from your site that submenus drop down from the main menu items, but placing new links as sub submenus may not be supported by your theme.

Yes the menu categories are set as sub menus, as the news drop down is, and when I am logged in as admin the menus, pages and posts display exactly as I want them too.

I tried the above points (except disabling every single plugin) and still no joy. Grrr.

Oh I see, so the changes in the builder are reflected on the front end of the site, but only while logged in. Apologies, at first I thought the problem was that they weren’t reflected at all on the front-end.

Could you let me know what you’re trying to link to exactly (a link to an example page would be great) and where in the menu structure it should be? I’ll check it out from my end.

    Another idea re cache.

I’ve run into cache problems in the past. Once, after I did all the regular things to clear cache, I went into my site’s file system and renamed any files named cache … in the my-content folder. No need to delete them, just rename them in case you need them back (I never did).

    It worked.

    Hope it helps.

Just to complicate things further…the changes seem to be displaying perfectly on mobiles, just not desktops or tablets…

It does still have all the hallmarks of a cache issue. Did you check for cache files in wp-content as in Jerry’s reply above?

No I can’t find my files. Where would they be?

We have also just discovered that the missing sub-categories DO appear when you are on certain pages. So if you go to http://www.callscripter.com/ then navigate to about > the team then navigate to the media drop down, the missing sub-menus (case studies and corporate literature) appear and are accessible.

You’d need to access your site files through either your hosting control panel file browser, or FTP (the first way is easiest if you’re not familiar with FTP).

In the wp-content directory of your site, look for any files or folders with cache in the name and rename them. Don’t delete them, just in case, just renaming should be enough to get everything working again.
