Even though it’s a multisite install, you would need to have a subscription for each site. You can add up to nine sites to the Pro plan for five dollars per month per site, or $59 per year per site by following these steps:
http://docs.akismet.com/billing/add-more-sites/
If you plan on more than ten sites, you’ll need an Enterprise subscription.
Hi Greg,
Just to clarify you count as each site in the admin panel.
I’m running subfolders at the same address each sub is a site.
For example,
http://www.example.com
http://www.example.com/site1
http://www.example.com/site2
Would be 3 sites although they reside at the same domain.
That’s good to know as I’m testing it out on a subfolder. However my institution segments our site into about 65 sub folders on multisite.
So there is a big difference form 1 site and 65 based on my infrastructure.
By using the method referenced above I appear to be able to be able to activate the site.
Would that be frowned upon from your perspective as a hack?

So in your example that would be three sites. Basically, even though you can hard-code the API key for an entire multisite, if there’s a separate admin dashboard it would need a subscription.
For 65 sites, you’d need to go the Enterprise route, there’s no limit on the number of sites on that plan.
Okay, Any chance Akismit (and vaultpress) would offer a multi-site option in the future at a lower cost than enterprise?
In the meantime I’ll deactivate hard-coded API and sign up for a paid account as soon as it’s needed.
