• This is supposed to be the worlds best backup plugin for wordpress ? it may be the best premium one, but the free version is basically useless and it’s on purpose.
Let me tell you why it’s useless, because you can’t download a backup, you can only download parts of it.
So what happens when you can’t press the Restore button in case a wordpress update failed or your site got hacked, you know, when you actually need it ? nothing, because you can’t download the backup, it also means you can’t install a fresh copy of wordpress and restore your backup (like a lot of other plugins allow you to), all this is on purpose, because if you could download a backup, you could also use it to clone (migrate) your website, but migrating is a premium feature, so they had to cripple the backup to give you a reason to buy the addon.
So you can only use the free version if your site is already working, what’s the point of that?

    Hi @joegp

“Let me tell you why it’s useless, because you can’t download a backup, you can only download parts of it.”
    > There can be a lot of reasons for this. Are you getting an error you download the backup from your WordPress dashboard? If yes, please open a topic here so we can help you find out the cause of the issue. We always reply to support tickets.

Alternatively, you can download the backup directly via FTP and can be located in the “wp-content/updraft” folder or if using a remote storage you can download it directly from your storage. Have you already tried that?

” you could also use it to clone (migrate) your website, but migrating is a premium feature, so they had to cripple the backup to give you a reason to buy the addon.”
    > Migration is only used if you move to a different URL/domain. If using the same domain and moving to new host, then you can absolutely use the free version.

    > No. As long as you have a copy of your backup then you can restore your site using UpdraftPlus or even manually (without using UpdraftPlus). We have guides available here.

I see that my colleague has explained how to retrieve and restore your backup. To add to that, this link explains – https://updraftplus.com/faqs/what-format-are-backups-made-in-is-it-nasty-and-proprietary/ – that UpdraftPlus backups are standard zip and SQL files, and hence can be restored in many suitable tools. And of course, if you sent your backup to remote storage (e.g. Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.), as is strongly recommended, then you can always access your backup directly from there. If you didn’t then, as Bryle says, you can use FTP – and also you can use the file manager in your web hosting control panel.
