• Site speed had degraded over time. Cleaned up plugins, crunched images, did all the housecleaning necessary to get WP moving. Then I checked our server records and saw that half a dozen notoriously resource-sucking, bad acting bots were pounding our site, despite rules set out in our robots.txt file. Thought about altering the htaccess file to ban the bad actor bots, but this plugin is so much better. First of all, the plugin detects the bots that ignore the robots.txt rules. No need to use server records to catch the bots yourself and ban them individually. Since installing this plugin a week ago, it has nailed half a dozen bad bots. Site speed is up and best of all, spam comments are waaaaay down.

Installation is simple. All you have to do is insert one line into your robots.txt file and you’re good to go. You can choose to get email notifications when bad bots get blackholed. Who wouldn’t want that satisfaction? Only caveat is to make sure the bots that are whitelisted by default are ones you want to have visiting your site(s). I removed one as it was the subject of multiple online complaints concerning resource hogging and ignoring robots.txt file instructions.

We don’t need the Pro Version’s functionality, and the developer should make a way for donations. I’d be first in line.
