Working on WP site without being live (5 posts)

I am new to WP and need some pointers, if this is the right place great if not can someone suggest where I can go?

I have used the 3.2.1 version of WP on a new site my company just started. The install and major portions were done by a hired 'techy guy' and I learned the 'how to' on the rest. We love the new site so much we want to have the company's main site turned into a WP site. But we want to do it from 'scratch' download, install, etc.

At the moment it is under a webhost which we want to change over, and also under a third party designer. We have chosen our WP theme, paid and downloaded it. I have not downloaded WP 3.2.1 yet, or transfered the domain/server.

One of the main questions I have is how can I begin to work on our website without having it go live on the web? We had this problem with the last one, went live when we were still working on it. Is there a way to work on the files without having them uploaded on the server? If I must work via the ftp can I withold them from view?

Any tips, pointers, advice, etc. is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

go ahead and set it up on server - then just use this plugin

or set it up in a test folder and move it when ready

Me too, brand new to WP. Same kind of question ...
I would like to have a "sandbox"-like area where I can work over the span of a few hours to a few days on a page(s) and adding to the navigation. Is this possible?
Is this what you're talking about in the last link? (More questions if that's the case.)

Thank you for this. The documentation is quite helpful. But once I get into it I will probably have 20 more questions.

    Hello Newbie2,

Do you want to work on your website before publishing to the world, or just keep your page(s) hidden until final draft?

In our case we don't want the public to see our site before it is the finished product.

in this case many folks make a local install on their computers that mirror their live sites
when changes are made to files, you can simply upload them to live site
if changes made to database (stuff is actually written there - like posts, pages, etc,) - databse is easily exported to live site
of course, back up back up back up

    installing wp locally (assuming windows)

    if on a mac

    database back up - export
