Worked once and the next day jpeg images were back
-
*please check below my disagreement with the developer of this plugin, who is very helpful and reactive to my comment, in order to understand why i initially had a 1 star review.
—————–It is really strange, plugin made all jpg to webP conversions, webp images were loaded on my website initially and the next day i checked it again, all conversions were gone without changing anything or adding from my side.
Even GTMetrix page ratings deteriorated and image sizes were different yesterday that i installed and tried the plugin than today that i rechecked some of my pages.i also checked on the wp-content/uploads-webpc/uploads folder which is now empty.
Really not ideal, one day it works (after waiting 30 minutes to convert my images) and the other it doesn’t.
I also checked the Multimedia “Converter for Media”. Yesterday it showed that each image is optimized, now it is like that Optimized file size: – (meaning no optimization happened)
Finally, i checked plugins settings and i today i get this >>>
0%converted to WebP
21 540 images remaining
This is insane! Do we have to perform image optimization on a daily basis for this to work?
I do not understand it, 21,540 were optimized yesterday but now they are gone? I did not delete anything, is this a server setting? is it a plugin bug?, i don’t get it!- This topic was modified 1 year, 1 month ago by johnravrasta.

Hi @johnravrasta,
I am sorry you have encountered a problem with our plugin. Do not worry, I will try to help you.
Tell me please, why do you write a 1 star review first instead of asking for help here? We try very hard to help everyone, so we respond to the support forum very quickly.
Deleting the contents of the /uploads-webpc directory is possible by the plugin in two scenarios:
- you have deactivated the plugin via the WordPress panel and then uninstalled it – then all converted files are deleted automatically
- in the plugin settings, on the list of supported directories, you have removed the directory /uploads – then unused directories with converted files will be deleted
There is no other way for the plugin to delete the converted files by itself. I am the author of this plugin and I know what is in the plugin code. Something can’t happen for which there is no code in the plugin that can do it. The /uploads-webpc/ directory must have been removed by someone or by another plugin. I think you are aware that the plugin is used by over 300,000 users – you don’t think that every user of the plugin converts all the images every day?
Please tell me what exactly did you do after converting the images?
What version of the plugin are you using?
I believe that together we will find a solution to the problem. Thank you in advance for your willingness to cooperate.Best,
MateuszHello Mateusz and many thanks for your answer. I added a one star review because i was sure there was something wrong with the plugin. What is wrong according to my humble opinion? The fact that it is not clearly documented on the configuration/settings pages, where all users will go and choose their optimization options.
After reading your 2nd bullet point i am almost certain that the problem is the 2nd point. So, this is what i did:
-Installed latest plugin version
-selected UPLOADS folder (or it was selected by default)
-it found around 23k, so i pressed convert and waited for about 30 minutes to complete.
-Checked it, and everything seemed to work ok.
-Then, as my website was using another old image gallery plugin (nextgen) that stored images on the GALLERY folder, i went to settings and selected Gallery folder and saved. I do not remember if selecting two or more folders is possible on your plugin’s settings but i remember that the UPLOAD folder was not selected, only the GALLERY.I did this because i said to my self: “OK, images on the upload folder are converted to webP, lets complete the task by converting jpeg images on the gallery folder”.
Then, the next day, i retested my website and all images on the UPLOAD folder were not converted to webP and website was serving again JPEG
So, as a result, do you mean that if i select and try to optimize a folder different than UPLOADS, it will delete all webP files and will optimize only the new folder images? Why is this not written somewhere in a visible manner so that users are not confused? I believe that this is super important point and lack of communicating this feature to your users. In any way, i think that settings page could be much better displayed and explained. Please accept my sincere apologies if this info was already there but i somehow missed it during my work with your plugin.
In anyway, i will re install and redo the whole process and let you know. I think that my rating can be updated in any case.- This reply was modified 1 year, 1 month ago by johnravrasta.
Thank you @johnravrasta for your answer!
If you remove the directory /uploads from the list of supported directories, the converted files are deleted. This is normal and logical action. If you do not want the files from a given directory to be available in WebP format, they should be deleted.
I will also add that in the field of supported directories it is possible to select one or more options. This is a checkbox field type, i.e. one where more than one value can be selected.
Please explain to me what your doubts are.
Hi Mateusz,
our disagreement is that for me the “If you remove the directory /uploads from the list of supported directories, the converted files are deleted. This is normal and logical action” that you mention above is not at all logical.
On your General settings page it says
Supported directories
Files from these directories will be converted to output formats.
and then there are checkboxes with 5 system folders (uploads, gallery, themes etc)
unchecking “/uploads” does not mean to me that if i had previously converted all 21k jpeg images there, that now they will be deleted, simply because i unchecked it. For me, it means that new jpegs from /uploads will not be converted to webP but that existing converted images will remain as is.
The action of deletion is very serious and should be explained somehow and somewhere on this General Settings page that you have.Thank you for your answer @johnravrasta,
Please consider the following scenario:
- in the list of supported directories, you have selected the /uploads directory and the /themes directory
- you have converted all images to WebP format from the /uploads and /themes directories
- you decide you don’t want the images in the /themes directory to be in WebP format – what to do in this situation?
- in the list of supported directories, you can remove the /themes directory and assume that this directory will not be supported in WebP format
- however, let’s consider your proposal – you deleted the /themes directory, and the files from this directory are still available in WebP format, then how is someone supposed to restore the original files for the /themes directory?
I believe the current course of action is logical. If you want to support the /uploads directory, you don’t disable it in the settings. If you did it by accident, I’m sorry, but in fact it didn’t happen by itself, you, by removing the /uploads directory from the list of supported directories, decided that you don’t want to support this directory.
What do you think? What other solution do you see for the scenario I described above? I will be grateful for your opinion.
hi @mateuszgbiorczyk ,
I think that a message under the “Supported directories” telling something like this would make things much easier for dump users like me:
“Deselecting any of the supported directories and saving will result in permanent deletion of your optimized images and fallback to your original not-optimized media. You will have to recreate these files if you want optimized images on your website again” or something similaror remove completely the deletion action from the supported directories and create a very simple additional tab called “Delete optimized images” and let users decide if they want to delete any of the optimized content.
You as a programmer and developer of this plugin have a specific way of working in your head. Not all users think the same way and user interface should be ‘idiot’-proof in order to avoid misunderstandings like this.
@johnravrasta Thank you for your answer. I will try to answer individual parts of your statement.
I think that a message under the “Supported directories” telling something like this would make things much easier for dump users like me
Below this field you currently have a hint: “Files from these directories will be converted to output formats.”. Adding very long descriptions ends up not being read by anyone. Believe me, in the history of this plugin I had many questions about how the plugin works, even though on the right side of the widget there is a heading “How does the plugin work” and a detailed description. The more descriptions there are in the plugin settings, the more people ignore them, because they are overwhelmed by it.
or remove completely the deletion action from the supported directories create a very simple additional tab called “Delete optimized images” and let users decide if they want to delete any of the optimized content.
By default, the plugin supports the /uploads directory. Additionally, the following directories can be supported: /cache, /gallery/, /plugins and /themes. I believe the current way is simple – you don’t want to support the selected directory, you can uncheck it. What can be done simpler?

Of course, everyone has a different point of view, but let’s break it down into prime factors:
- You have a field called “Supported directories”.
- This field is a checkbox, i.e. it is a multiple choice field – you can select as many values as you want. According to UX standards, the checkbox is square with the “CHECK MARK” symbol. Another type is the radio box, which is round and you can only select one value. I think that I don’t have to explain it to people, because this is how fields in forms on all websites work.
- You have a hint for the field: “Files from these directories will be converted to output formats”.
- I understand the hint that if you uncheck a given directory, the files from this directory will not be converted, i.e. they will be available in the default format.
- If you uncheck a given directory, the converted files from that directory are deleted. If you check it again, in the “Bulk Optimization of Images” section you will see that you have unconverted images.
In fact, the root of the problem was that you wanted to support the /gallery directory, and instead of just checking /gallery, you unchecked /uploads and checked /gallery. Unfortunately I can’t understand why you did it this way. There is nothing in the plugin settings that would indicate to you that you should do this.
What do you think I should do?
Believe me, I’ve spent hundreds, if not thousands, of hours developing this plugin. Simplicity is one of its greatest advantages in the opinion of thousands of users – compared to competing plugins. Creating additional solutions only to delete the contents of the converted directories would make it difficult to handle the entire settings tab.
Therefore, the functionality of supported directories is handled by one field – you want to support a given directory, you can select it. You don’t want it, you can unselect it and files from this directory are available in their original format. Don’t you think that simplicity is the key to success?
May i ask you something else? Did you have any other incident and complain like this? If not, then there is no reason to change anything as it seems that only me found it strange to have this type of behavior on the supported folders. But if you see that other people also complain then you have a pattern and no matter how you think it works you should improve or add info. Otherwise keep up the good work and thanks for the time you took to answer my questions.
I need to check avif format now because it seems very promising, still i am a little worried about browser support or the work added to the web server in case it has to fallback from avif to webP in case it does not support it.have a nice day
@johnravrasta I have not had this type of reports from other users. I try to meet user expectations if there are more submissions. You must be aware that the plugin will never meet the expectations of 100% of users – if it meets 99% of users, it is already a success in my opinion.
No need to worry about AVIF format support. It’s broad, but maybe I’ll tell you how the plugin works so you can understand it better:
When a browser tries to download an image file, the server checks if it supports the AVIF format (if enabled in the plugin settings). If so, the browser will receive an equivalent of the original image in the AVIF format. If it does not support AVIF, but supports the WebP format, the browser will receive the equivalent of the original image in WebP format. In case the browser does not support either WebP or AVIF, the original image is loaded. This means full support for all browsers.
