  • Is it possible to have a (published) page on a site and work on a draft of an updated version?

That is, I want to keep the page published so that it is publicly viewable, but have a draft revision in the backend that is being worked on. At some time in the future the draft would be published and it would replace the page on the public site.

  • When you “write” a page or post, just save it as “draft” and you can go back and work on it as many times as you want from the “manage” link. Nothing happens until you “publish” it.

I have the same question. I think the previous poster missed the crux of the question… is there a way to save a draft of a page/post that is already published?

Imagine I have a home page that’s published on the site. I want to make extensive edits to that home page while still serving the current version to the site’s users. How can I explicitly save my edits while I work (without relying on autosave and without publishing my incomplete edits)?

You can’t, though I believe someone requested that as a feature recently.

You’d have to start a totally new post, save it as a draft, then when you are ready, copy and paste into the ‘old’ post.
