• I really love the simplicity and elegance of wordpress’s website (the first page that appears when you load http://wordpress.org). Where can I find a theme/template that looks just like their website.

    Thanks for your help!

The WordPress.org theme is copyrighted, so any duplication would be illegal.

There are, however, over 300 other themes to choose from:

Thanks for your quick reponse, macmanx. Does anyone know of any templates that come close to wordpress.org’s without infringing on copyright violations? In general, I really like the simple top menu and the pleasant, but not drab, monochromatic appearance. I like the fact that it looks kind of like a traditional newspaper. Thanks for your feedback.

There are a few. Have a look through the Theme Browser:

Ok thanks. I have looked at dozens of wp themes but haven’t found one that was quite as nice as wordpress.org’s – at least for what I want to do. I guess that’s why it’s copyrighted. I will continue my search. If any one knows of a specific theme off hand, please let me know.

not to be a biatch, but where is the CSS to wordpress.org copyright protected? I see nothing here: http://wordpress.org/wp2.css?1

here, btw, is a wonderful post and some fascinating comments on that very subject: http://mezzoblue.com/archives/2003/12/18/css_copyrig/

It looks like whooami is right. I don’t see any copyright protection labels anywhere. I just wish I can find a theme that looks very similar to wordpress.org’s. I also like the simple menu system where you can click one of the main topics at the top and then be able to click on subtopics on the dark gray menu on the right. This is almost exactly what I would like to accomplish on my website. It’s really pleasant to navigate. Any tips on how to do that?

as far as I know, copyright notices only serve as an FYI. you do not need to list one in order for you to retain copyright.

not what you’re looking for but the background tile is from http://squidfingers.com/patterns/ he asks for a link back to his site. shame on wp for not providing one (at least in the css) particularly as they’re always asking people to link to them.

I dont have any ‘tips’ about how to create it but simplicity is not copyrighted. blix theme will get you largely there.

“copyright notices only serve as an FYI”

That is correct. Only the original author/owner of a work is entitled to use, reproduce or distribute it unless they;ve given prior, explicit permission to do so.

The lack of a visible copyright notice does not mean that it is open for copying; copyright is implicit and does not need explicit mention.

Until Matt gives his permission, you do not have the right to copy the design.

Good to know, thank you 🙂 I, personally wasnt aware of that.

oops. they do link to squidfingers on the about page: http://wordpress.org/about/.

    shame on me.

Thanks for the posts. I feel better informed. I wish I was better at coming up with my own nice designs. I just wanted to gain inspiration from other designs and wordpress.org just really stood out.
