We’re building a site that will likely have a very small amount of traffic (less than 100 visitors per day). However, it may spike to 10,000+ visitors per hour on certain days.

Is WordPress.com hosting good for traffic spikes, or will the site slow down and shut down? Are they using shared hosting?

Has anyone had experience with traffic spikes on WordPress.com’s hosting?

WordPress.com is a very different beast. It’s not shared hosting, VPS, or dedicated. You basically get a blog on what is the world’s largest WordPress Multisite Network, load-balanced across several datacenters all over the world.

It can handle traffic spikes, because if your site were to go down over a traffic spike, then the whole thing would go down. 😉

To clear up any confusion, WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two different entities: https://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_vs_WordPress.com

WordPress.com has complete documentation and support contacts at https://support.wordpress.com/

Thank you! Since WordPress.org and WordPress.com are separate entities, is there a way to get a similar response from them? The WordPress.com web site says nothing about traffic spikes or how their servers are configured. They do, however, talk about their VIP hosting plans. That scares me into thinking that the site could go down unless we pay for a VIP hosting plan.

At https://support.wordpress.com/ there’s a blue “Get Help” button at the bottom which will take you to a few different contact methods.

Thank you! Do you know how quickly they tend to respond by email? I’ll ask them these things by email since there’s no phone support. I feel good about it in general, but if our site were to crash from traffic spikes, I’d like to know that WordPress.com would be there to help us in a timely fashion! Thank you again!

It’s the weekend, so they’ll probably reply by Monday or Tuesday I’d assume.
