wordpress won’t put a space between sentences

I’ve posted a page with endnotes. But WordPress (or xhtml) won’t put a space beteen the endnote number in the document and the beginning of the next sentence. How do I force a blank space between an endnote and the beginning of the next sentence in xhtml (not in CSS). Forgive if this is not the place to post this query – I’m a newbie.
