WordPress Won’t Back off my XHTML :(

  • Please could you tell me how to stop WordPress from forecfully manipulating the code in posts that I make? I don’t have the “automatically edit improperly nested tags” option checked, but WordPress continues to stubbornly fudge up my XHTML over and over. I try to put line breaks or horizontal rules or borders or other tags, and wordpress replaces them with divs and p tags. P tags?!

  • Yes, paragraph tags. They are preferred over multiple line breaks in pretty much all cases.

Anyway, check out /wp-includes/default-filters.php and look for “wpautop”. That’s the line break to paragraph tags filter.

Wonderful. Thank you very much. What function does the BalanceTags filter serve?

Eek. Didn’t work. Removed wpautop filter and formatting of 100’s of previous blog posts became p-less. I wish I could edit the filter itself. Sometimes p tags don’t make the line breaks like line breaks do, that is just the problem.
