Support » Fixing WordPress » WordPress with site alias

  • So this is the situation: I have setup a wordpress website for a client on his domain (let’s say http://www.domain.com).
He has created an alias for the website, which he wants to become his new “public address” (let’s say http://www.alias.com).

WordPress and everything works like a charm from http://www.domain.com, and http://www.alias.com redirects to the content without problems.

My issue is: whenever I click any link, it redirects to http://www.domain.com/link (like it should). What I want is to keep the url alias, instead of going back to the main domain.

I tried changing the site url in wordpress setting, but permalinks aren’t recognized that way… If I try to access http://www.alias.com/permalink I get a “Not Found” error.

Also: when I access the website through the alias, it doesn’t seem to get the page title info from wordpress (browser tab only shows the url instead of page title).

Hope I made my question clear enough for anyone to understand haha…

  • You cannot use a forwarded (alias) domain name in this way. The new domain name actually needs to be set up correctly on the client’s hosting and then the urls changed in WordPress. See Changing_The_Site_URL for details of how to do this correctly.

In theory, then, how should I configure the new domain?

The part on WordPress’ side I can get to work (I think), did so on another website, but never tried configuring an alias or forwarder to work in this way…

You need to actually point the new domain name at the site via the name servers.
