WordPress white screen of death

If curl is not present on the server (or indeed localhost) the plugin still installs, but wordpress now only displays a white screen. I was only able to determine this from examining the apache error log. Maybe a check for curl or at last a warning is required? Can the plugin use something else if curl is not present? wget maybe?
