? It’s the same now as it has been for over a year…. I don’t get you?
Ksec seems to be saying that the WordPress developers should put more thought into the design of the Web site than the design of the actual product.
The site works just fine; is easily navigable; does not contain garish color combinations, annoying popup banners, or animations; content basically stays in the same place (except that search box that seems to develope wanderlust on occasion) so that users can find what they need. I say: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
Whilst the site does indeed work fine, I don’t really feel like it adds anything to the WP “brand”.
It doesn’t look particularly inviting, simple or fun. Compare it to the Blogger website for example.
We all know and love WP and may think that the website is not overly important and it isn’t compared to the actaul platform itself, but hey, you only get one chance to make a good first impression and all.
I disagree that the design is banal or boring. And I personally am not too thrilled with the look and feel of Blogger.com either. The colors are garish and it’s rather cluttered and extremely slow-loading.
I am not saying that the web site is unimportant; in fact it is, besides WordPress itself, the most important thing about WordPress because without the web site how would WordPress be publicized or distributed or supported?
I think it is extremely simple in design; things are very easy to find; there is nothing complicated about it. And I’m not exactly sure how much fun I am supposed to be having here; are you suggesting there should be more fun? ;-P
I have no qualms with the usability of the site, just the looks. All the grey makes the site feel very drab.
And surely you want to convey a sense of fun, shouldn’t blogging be fun? ;-p
If one compare Movable Type against WordPress website we will immediately see the difference.
Ksec – true …. this site is clearer, more usable, less full of junk 😉
This is a topic that has been hashed and rehashed I don’t know how many times. The bottom line is this: It is how it is and is how the owner wants it to be. And that is all that should matter. Yes, personal I find all of this greyness a bit drab and depressing, but it isn’t my site. Yes I wish there was a little more color, and a little more contrast in some places, but no matter what you do, some one some where is going to find fault for what ever colours get picked. It’s a fact of life. I like the fact that graphics are at a minimum (background) and there aren’t any flashing images that send me into a sizure. You don’t let your readers tell you how your website should look do you? You select what you think looks good. Everyone has their own tastes. This is the look that’s destined to be used here.
How about you just set up your own stylesheet for it and select that option, overriding the “norm”?
We come here for info and to help those who need help, not for “fun”…. and I personally don’t like either MT’s or blogger’s site designs.
*shrug* All a matter of personal taste and the site’s whole point, I’d say.
