• It wouldn’t bother me so much that WordPress suddenly wants FTP info to install and update plugins if it would accept the information. My login works fine with my FTP client but does not work per WP’s request. The most common error is “Username/Password incorrect for xxxxxx”

The IMPORTER won’t work either as I’ve tried to upload a .xml file for this new site. I’m migrating from Hostgator to Godaddy. Every few installations have this problem. Not every instance. I know I can use my FTP client for plugins but not for the .xml install or images.

    Anyone got a clue?
    Thanks.

  • This has been caused by changes in your server’s configuration. Try asking your hosts about it.

    Thanks @ThemeDiva.
That doesn’t explain why WP says the FTP login info is incorrect. It simply isn’t. If WP would accept the login info, I’d have LESS of a problem. 🙂

Any body know any way I can import .xml data WITHOUT using WP Importer? At least then my migrated WP installs would be populated instead of useless.

    Cheers!

It would bother me, that would get on my nerves. 😉

Can you check the file and directory permissions on your WordPress installation? When WordPress attempts to perform an update and it cannot write to the directory or files then it falls back onto the FTP method.

For directories the permission should be 755 for directories and 644 for files. Check with your host, if they altered the permissions or file/directory ownership then that may account for why you’re getting this.

If you want to import into a blank fresh installation and have access to the database of the installation where you got that XML file then I suggest you treat this as a move and try these steps.

It you want to import into an existing installation then getting the importer working really is your best bet.
