• Hi all! I need some URGENT help.

I hired a web designer to design my site. Everything went well and he made a great-looking site.

Then, the other day, I was on my WordPress control panel and it said there was an updated version of WordPress available. So, I downloaded it. NOW, my web design is gone!!!

When I go to the “Appearance” tab, and then to “Themes”, I only see one theme (Twenty Ten 1.1 by the WordPress team), and under Available Themes it says: “You only have one theme installed right now. Live a little! You can choose from over 1,000 free themes in the WordPress.org Theme Directory at any time: just click on the Install Themes tab above.”

WHAT HAPPENED AND HOW DO I GET MY OLD DESIGN BACK!!!!

  • Your designer modified the default Twenty Ten theme. As as result, his changes were over-written when you upgraded WordPress. For this reason, it is recommended that you consider creating a child theme for your customisations.

The only way to get it back is to restore from your file backup. If you don’t have one ask your hosting company and your designer if they have one.

It sounds like your designer edited the twentyten theme and didn’t rename it – a very basic error to make which anyone working with WordPress professionally really should not make. There are warnings against doing this and the recommended method of creating a custom theme based on twentyten is to make a child theme anyway.

Edit – Oops Esmi beat me to it!

So, there is no way to restore it unless the designer has a backup of the file?

    Correct.

Is there any way to reverse the update?

I’m sorry but you can’t. The theme has been over-written.
