WordPress update failed, invalid permissions.

    I keep getting permission issues when trying to upgrade WordPress.
    The only way I was able to get it to work was manually deleting every WordPress file and uploading the new files through FTP.

    But now I’m trying to upgrade the Genesis Framework, and running into what is probably the same permissions problem. I need the automatic updates to work so the client can upgrade on their own. How can I fix this?

    Genesis upgrade output:
    installing the latest version…
    Removing the old version of the theme…
    Could not remove the old theme.
    Theme update failed.
