Support » Plugin: Contact Form 7 » WordPress Twenty Sixteen broken by v5.1.1

  • Hi There,

Just to let everyone know that the standard WordPress Twenty Sixteen Theme doesn’t seem to function with CF7 plugin v5.1.1 and Google reCAPTCHA v3. The warned of error message “There was an error trying to sesnd your message. Please try again later” appears as per the developers blog post warning.

Still love CF7 as a form builder but have disengaged the reCAPTCHA part and swapped out to Advanced noCaptcha & Invisible Captcha plugin which integrates with CF7 via the shortcode [anr_nocaptcha g-recaptcha-response].

This gives you back what we all had before, Google reCAPTCHA v2 “I am not a robot” checkbox and life is good again.

Still appreciate the plugin and all kudos to the developer for his excellent code & support but my vote is to allow a choice of v2 / v3 Google reCAPTCHA as the optimal solution to cover everyone’s needs in the best way.

FYI found that Google reCAPTCHA v3 slowed my site rendering down by approximately 0.5 second so there is a definite speed hit with this solution as well.

  • I’ve just tested CF7 plugin v5.1.1 with the WordPress Twenty Sixteen Theme & Google reCAPTCHA v3 on a couple of our test sites – not seeing any problems.

The problem you list “There was an error trying to send your message. Please try again later” is more likely due to a email sending issue on your particular WP install.

See If You Have Email Problems – most people that work carefully through this list of email sending issues are able to solve their particular problems.

    Hi Neil,

    Thanks for that double-check.

With the prior CF7 plugin version to 5.1.1 all email was sending correctly from the same site using the Twenty Sixteen theme, only upon the update to 5.1.l did this error start occuring.

That said if it works for you then this may indeed be a site specific problem. Sorry for not checking on a vanilla version of twenty sixteen to confirm before posting and I appreciate your feedback.

It’s always possible that something changed on your WP install (that you may not even be aware of) at around the same time that you updated.

I’ve the same problem, always a border orange with the message There was an error trying to send your message. Please try again later. Why recaptcha V3 reject my site 🙁

I’m seeing the same issue with 5.1 and 5.1.1, but limited to sites of mine using the Flatsome theme. These worked perfectly up to CF7 5.05 (though these would have used reCaptcha v2/Invisible and not v3 as mandated in the >5.1 CF7 versions).

I have some other sites with different themes and they’re OK with CF7 5.1 & 5.1.1, reCaptcha v3.

It may be that your issue is that V3 is treating your testing behavior as SPAM. Manually enter the form fields (avoid autofill) and try a differernt email address.

See Contact Form 7 5.1.1 – theme needs to properly loads JavaScript in the footer area of each page.

We know some theme authors improperly omit wp_footer() call to block scripts from loading. That is one of the worst practices in theme development that will surely causes problems like those explained above. Ask the theme author for a fix if you find your theme has such issues. I only use recaptcha on one page (contact page) but can’t see the problem with javascript load. Where is the problem with Javascript? CF7 inserts google recaptcha javascript code, and other loads seem to be ok.
How can I find the problem?
    Thanks
