I have a weird problem that has me going in circles. Here’s what’s going on:

On Friday, late afternoon, we went live with a new website. The new website is running WordPress (old one did not). We have been working on it in house for 18 months with no problems accessing the site from within the network or outside.

I got in to the office at 6:30am and worked on the site (some last minute content changes) and everything was fine. When people got in at about 8 (we’re a school district) and started using the site (it is the home page for every computer in the district), the site stopped working. When we tried to access it, it timed out.

Now, here’s the weird part. It only crashed WITHIN the network. When I remoted into my home machine and tested it from there, it worked just fine. This has been going on for a couple of days now.

We brought up a copy of the site in house in the meantime and pointed our internal DNS to the in house copy. The external users are still pointing to the site at the host. They continue to be fine. When everyone is pointing to the internal site, a few of us overrode the DNS with a hosts entry. It worked just fine. When we switched DNS back to the hosted version, we couldn’t access it again in house.

We have whitelisted all ports and traffic on the firewall. We are bypassing the filter. The ISP says they are not blocking anything. The host (Hostgator) says they are not blocking our IP. Honestly, we think we have eliminated just about everything.

The site is running WordPress 4.7.2. All plugins are up to date. The following plugins are installed and activated:

    Duplicate Plug and Post
    Footer Text,
    Header and Footer Scripts
    iThemes Security
    PHP Code for Posts
    Remove Title
    Replace Image
    Smart Slider 3
    User Role Editor
    WP Widget Bundle
    WP-Optimize
    WPBakery Visual Composer

In addition we have a few plugins in that are not activated:

    Akismet
    Comet Cache
    Regenerate Post Permalinks
    Reset WP
    WordPress Importer

If anyone has any thoughts on this, I would appreciate it. This has certainly been driving me nuts.

  • Hi,

Do you have an internal DNS server that may be sending requests to the site to an internal server, because of a TLD it deems internal? Or possibly a proxy trying to route requests to your site to an internal server, again because of a familiar TLD or similar?

    Cheers

We have an internal DNS server. It points to the IP of the host…

I think we have this figured out. The host may have been blocking our IP when traffic went high. They say no but we switched to another host and everything is working…

    Thanks for your assistance!
