WordPress Sites Have Htaccess Removed

  • So I just noticed that about 3/4 of my sites no longer have the proper code in the .htaccess file. While the homepage would load, other pages would recieve a 404 error. Of course I added the code back and everything works fine now, but does anyone know why the majority of my sites would have the htaccess code removed? There weren’t any malicious redirects, only the proper permalink code missing. This caused about 4 days of downtime which was certainly some lost $ on my end.

    Here’s the code which went missing…

    # BEGIN WordPress
    <IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /
    RewriteRule ^index\.php$ – [L]
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
    RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
    </IfModule>
    # END WordPress

  • What change did you make before those 4 days? That should help to figure out what caused this issue. Other pages showing 404 is clearly due to the missing code in .htaccess file. By clicking “Save Changes” button at your site’s Settings -> Permalinks should automatically insert the permalink code too.
