WordPress site running slower than Grandma…

Help! Our web site (www.whiskycast.com) is running slower than Grandma in the 25th mile of a marathon, with page load times of nearly a minute! Have tried disabling the handful of plugins we use and bringing them back on one at a time, but that doesn’t resolve the problem. Contacted our hosting provider (Tech Superpowers in Boston), and they claim all of their other sites are running perfectly and the problem must be in our code (which they’ll look at for $250/hour). Haven’t hacked any of the code, and there’s been no change in our theme (Adapt from Designer Themes) or CSS in more than a year.

We keep WordPress and all of our plugins updated to the latest versions, and I can’t find an explanation that would resolve this. Has anyone else had a similar problem, and if so, how did you resolve it?

Slowness/high CPU usage could be due to (but not limited to):
– a poor or memory intensive theme. switch to the default theme and test loading time
– poor or memory intensive plugins. one by one disable plugins and test loading time
– your server is slow (e.g., “process hang”, overload, you get a lot of visitors, other problems, etc.); generally, every inexpensive host out there is slow.

Test your site at (free online testing): http://gtmetrix.com/leverage-browser-caching.html OR http://www.webpagetest.org/

Thanks…did the gtmetrix test over the weekend, and it came back with a bunch of stuff I’d never seen before. Will look at the other resources…

You need audit all your wordpress files because it’s slow only on first page load.
I see your website using many BIG size image & flash animation.
I think this is the cause.

Please consider using animated gif with small size (below 500kb).
in example: This image loaded but not seen on your homepage:

It’s a killer.

My conslusion, redesign your website with friendly HTML5

Thanks…that image is a backup that only displays in non-Flash browsers such as iOS Safari, etc. We only have one Flash animation on the site for an advertiser, and the rest of the rotating images are done using Soliloquy galleries.

However the image will be loaded for flash supported browser.
It’s cause the slow. If you want use animation, make it simple with slider.
Many great plugin to make a nice animation.

I also suggest you to use this plugin: https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-mobile-detect/faq/
So the content will be delivered to proper browser.
