• I got an error saying this:
    Error establishing a database connection
This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host’s database server is down.

I checked the username and the password and both are fine, but I”m not sure what to do about the local host. Should it be different if I’m on a subdomain?

  • it depends on your hosting company… where is your site hosted?

    I’m not sure, I’m on a subdomain.

okay, is this a free website you’re talking about? because there inlies your problem if that’s the case.

wordpress is meant to be used on your own domain, that’s hosted with another company… paid hosting is pretty much the only way to go, as free hosts don’t typically give you access to the things you need access to.

are you talking about a site you’re hosting for free somewhere (like geocities or something) or is it a friend who’s hosting you, that can give you the info you need?

got the same problem, hoseted at one.com(formerly b-one.net)

    any toughts?

Check with your hosting company whether the 4 pieces of info you put in the wp-config file are correct.

LadyDeLaLuna: A friend is hostimg me. I asked her if she could help me, but she is just as confused as I am.

Moshu: I did, and they are correct…

hawaii – they can’t be correct, because it’s not connecting to the database. it’s just that simple.

your username and password need to be that of the MySQL database, not your FTP info or any other type of “login”. is the site hosted on a windows server, or a linux server? (should be linux, but is very important to know which)

there’s more information here that’s needed in order for anyone to help you – what’s the URL, where is the installation of all the WP files, and where/who exactly did you get the database information from?

i am getting same error, paid hosting, installed wordpress through fantastico. picked my own user name and password. using db name that is on my domain. set up config.php with info sent to me. what am i missing?

    thx pacer

    I don’t know.
Do you have cPanel for administering the site? I yes, read carefully this: http://www.tamba2.org.uk/wordpress/cpanel/

If something else, you may find yours (top left)
