After years of being available, WordPress has removed the plugin “MyThemeShop Connect” because of “Guideline Violation”, there is no more information than that.

MyThemeShop requires me to have “MyThemeShop Connect” installed or the themes will be disabled. I must download the plugin from their site and if I refuse I will have wasted money and I will have to buy a new WordPress theme.

What does exactly mean “Guideline violation”? How dangerous is it for me and thousands of other people to have this plugin installed?

  • Here are the guidelines: https://developer.wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-org/detailed-plugin-guidelines/#the-guidelines

They could be violating #7 (tracking users without consent) or maybe something else. The plugin team does not disclose why a plugin is suspended, until a few months after.

If you used a theme from the WordPress repository, it would be free and would not have requirements for plugins (that’s not allowed in themes in the repository).

Thank you @joyously very useful information.

The themes were premium and not available from WordPress repository.

It looks as if I will have to buy a new theme…

Just because the plugin is suspended or removed from the repository doesn’t mean you can’t still use it. You didn’t have any qualms about using it up until now.

    Hello @joyously

The reason was that the plugin was downloading the files from an external source (our servers), which is not allowed unless you are JetPack. There was nothing related to data collection or anything else.

The plugin was approved at first but after a few years, it was taken down since it was a mistake on the plugin’s approval team part to approve it without checking the service it provided.

    Hi @malcarada,

The plugin is still available for free from our servers and you can download it from here:
    https://mythemeshop.com/plugins/mythemeshop-theme-plugin-updater/

    Hope that helps. Thank you.

@mythemeshop I get that you don’t like it but a) that’s wrong and b) a bit inappropriate. If you have a problem with the plugin guidelines then feel free to take it up with the plugins team.

    @malcarada Wait. What?

MyThemeShop requires me to have “MyThemeShop Connect” installed or the themes will be disabled.

Which theme and is it on this site?

    Hello Jan

There’s nothing to be discussed, it’s been a few years since that has happened. It is just the informatian provided wasn’t correct when user asked about the plugin on WP.org

and no, the plugin is required only for the themes provided through our website so the automatic updates could be applied.

    Gotcha.

The plugin (now hosted on your site) is no longer available on this site for guideline violations. It’s needed for themes from your site and not hosted here and on your site.

OK then. This isn’t even a topic for these forums.

I appreciate people´s help. I only raised the issue here because I didnt know what guideline had been violated, I didn´t know if it had to do with privacy, security, etc. I wanted to know the specific reason since I am still using it.

Now that MyThemeShop has explained it, ok.

@jdembowski It is like you explained in your last post, everything, themes and plugins are hosted at their site, not here. Sorry if I caused any trouble to anybody not explaining it properly.
