• On several occasions I have the issue that my WordPress website remains in maintenance mode after I update the Yoast SEO plugin. I only see this happening when updating the Yoast SEO plugin and not when updating with other plugins.

    Steps

    • Logon to my WordPress website
    • Go to the update page
    • Start updating all the plugins (leave Yoast SEO to last)
    • Update the Yoast SEO plugin

After this has been done you can wait for a long time, but suddenly the site stops loading and you see nothing happening anymore. Once you refresh the site you get the maintenance message. In order to continue you need to go to the FTP of the website and remove the .maintenance file.

Have you had earlier reports on this topic? I have also tried updating the Yoast SEO plugin when it was the only active plugin (deactivated all the other plugins), but this gave the same result.

We apologize for any inconvenience. This issue occurs when the update process couldn’t be completed and as a result of this, the site remains in the maintenance mode. So, the only way to fix this is to manually remove the .maintenance file using FTP.

Thank you for your response. I am experiencing this the last couple of updates I am doing on my site. Each time I update the Yoast SEO plugin I can count on it that I need to go to FTP and remove the

    .maintenance

    file.

Isn’t there a root cause for this issue? Can I do something on my host to identify the problem?

    Hi,

We are not familiar with the set-up but the issue is most likely with the server or the host provider. We suggest verifying that your host provider meets the plugin requirements here: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/plugin-requirements/.

You may also ask the host to review the Server Error log in case there is a silent error that is being generated. It may appear on the log and can help better pinpoint the underlying cause.
