• My site is self-hosted (well, hosted by GoDaddy): alicewhitmoresblog.com
    When I moved to alicewhitmoresblog.com, I deleted my old wordpress.com site: lutheranliar.wordpress.com
Several wordpress.com bloggers have reported that they cannot find my current site.
They say that when they click on my gravatar, they are sent to the now-defunct site, which says (I just tried it) ‘Lutheranliar.wordpress.com is no longer available. The authors have deleted this site.’ I worry that I am losing followers before I even get them. Can you help? Thank you!

  • They will need to subscribe to your new site – followers are only possible on WordPress.COM. Have you set up JetPack on your new site? You should be able to move subscribers from your old site – although if you’ve deleted the site, that may not be possible.

Thank you! My old site was deleted before I even had any followers, so no migrating is in the cards. I wish, though, that potential wordpress.com followers could actually hit a ‘follow’ button like I can for their sites. Sigh. I think one thing I can do is stop commenting on blogs using my wordpress ID, and switch to an email-based comment. Then, when people click on my Gravatar, they go to the ‘real’, active wordpress.org-based site. Make sense?

May I ask why you deleted it? You could of made one last post on your wordpress.com site saying you have a new domain and go to alicewhitmoresblog.com

It depends on the commenting system, but setting your primary blog at https://wordpress.com/me/account will help.

Some commenting systems store your website URL once submitted and can only be changed by the site’s owner, but changing your Primary Blog in your WordPress.com settings will help future comments going forward and may help some old comments too.
