 * Hello – this may seem like a very strange question but I need some help on this.
   I am trying to “mimic” a site that is not setup in wordpress. I am trying to
   do the same thing in wordpress. here is the site: [http://psymax.dev.webriverinteractive.com/about/](http://psymax.dev.webriverinteractive.com/about/)
 * If you see at the bottom of the page there is this gray like strip that runs
   off the page on both sides to the very edges of the browser. From what I can
   tell using firebug; it was done just with a simple div and putting background
   color in that area.
 * Here is me trying to duplicate it in wordpress: [http://pmax.gtdsites.com/?page_id=14](http://pmax.gtdsites.com/?page_id=14)
 * Now I pretty much put the same thing but it is “limited” by the page boundaries
   on my wordpress setup. Now I know one way to do this in wprdpress and that is
   make a background pic and have it repeat across;and just have it start from a
   certain position going down or up. But I am wondering if having things “outside
   the page” – if the only way that can be done is with “background images”. I am
   sorry but I am kind of a newbie here. Or is there another way – perhaps with
   a different kind of theme that would allow me to do it similar with wordpress?(
   without a background image) thanks, gerard

 * At least one..probably many..
 * To discover what CSS is output by your theme, use a web inspection tool such
   as Firebug: [http://getfirebug.com/](http://getfirebug.com/) , Chrome Inspect
   Element: [https://developers.google.com/chrome-developer-tools/](https://developers.google.com/chrome-developer-tools/)
   or Internet Explorer 9+ F12 Dev. Tools: [http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd565627(v=vs.85)](http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd565627(v=vs.85)).

 * There are others.
 * When editing CSS, use a Child Theme
    [http://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes](http://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes)
   Custom CSS Plugin, or Theme provided custom CSS option. Edits to parent themes
   are lost on theme update.

 * On way to do that is to modify the HTML structure of the footer.php file – so
   that that stripe is outside the page boundaries.
 * Specifics would depend on how that theme is coded.

 * Hey guys: thanks for getting back with me on this, to Seacoast, thanks for your
   input, I was able to use firebug to get the CSS from the source site. So that
   is what started all of this. And I am using Thesis 1.85 so there is no need for
   a child theme. But thanks for your input.
 * Also – thanks wpyogi for replying. Do either you know where else I could look
   that would provide help on what wpyogi is suggesting?
 * Thanks so much, Gerard

 * Thanks Seacoast, I was wondering if you or WPyogi had a link to a page which
   gave more detail on or explained what WPY was saying? I am a newbie and I really
   have no idea where to begin on this.
 * Thanks, Gerard
