I’m trying to do exactly the same thing (I posted a forum question about 2-3 before yours).
Here’s what I have found so far…. there’s something called P2 Reloaded, http://p2reloaded.com/ which allows this functionality, but there are downsides: You don’t retain nearly as much control from the dashboard/admin as far as headers, footers, background colors, many other options and it doesn’t seem to be very stable in different browsers.
I’m a little bit stuck at the moment, because I really like the P2 interface and it’s degree of simplicity, but at this stage it seems like it may be easier to augment P2 rather than use P2 Reloaded.
Let me know if you have better luck with P2 Reloaded…. I’ll be interested to see what you find.
Btw…. to load P2 Reloaded, install WP and then go to the Dashboard > Appearance > themes > Install Themes (tab) > upload (browse to find the .zip of the P2 Reloaded theme on your drive)
