• The WordPress download came with PHP and MySQL included which we have installed on a Windows server, however have some questions regarding running it on Windows:

    1. Though its not mentioned, is Windows a suitable platform to run WordPress on? The download page says the following “We also recommend either Apache or Nginx as the most robust options for running WordPress, but neither is required.” It doesnt actually say Windows server is not suitable. We have it working on Windows, but are concerned of any potential security issues. Our in-house network IT people are Microsoft certified, not Linux experts. 🙁

    2. What is the best way to keep MySQL and PHP up-to-date? On previously used apache servers there has been cpanel where upgrading of PHP is easily enabled. How should this be handled easily on a Windows Server? Is there any equivellant to cpanel for windows?

    3. Is there any know issues with special characters in URLs on IIS? Version 6.2 (Build 9200). We are having trouble with the degree symbol working in URLs and some of our products include this in the title on import.

  • 1. Yes, WP can run on Windows. But my understanding is that most plugins and themes are tested only on LAMP or a similar stack. So, you should probably expect more glitches on Windows. Is outsourcing your hosting an option.
2 and 3 – sorry, I don’t know. Maybe someone with more expertise will chime in.
