Seems like something else is very wrong, “If you need to reinstall version -“

Why is it a – and not the version number you’re using? I feel that whatever is causing that is also causing WordPress to fail, since the updater system has no clue what version it currently is.

Try downloading WordPress again, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, and delete then replace your copies of everything on the server except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download. This will effectively replace all of your core files without damaging your content and settings, and update you to the current version too.

Some uploaders tend to be unreliable when overwriting files, so don’t forget to delete the original files before replacing them.

Also, if you want WordPress to auto-update, you’ll need to remove the define you quoted from wp-config.php.

    Thanks for replying.

OK For the help of others I did the following to fix this:

    1. I took a full backup of my Website and its Database via cPanel. (just in case)
    2. I deactivated all plugins

    BINGO!!!

I was able to update to 4.5.2

So it was one of my plugins. no idea which.

    Cheers

Do you still have the – showing for your current version at Dashboard -> Updates in your Dashboard?

    @james Huff

Things went from bad to worse.

To recap I deactivated all plugins. This prompted the “4.5.2 is available” link, so I eagerly updated.

However no images are being displayed anywhere on my website. 🙁

Deactivating all plugins didn’t fix the missing images. 🙁

I guess I will restore my backup as the client’s site is “broken” without any images.

    Thanks

Sorry I forget my manners. To answer your question:

Here is the dashboard before I deactivated all plugins:

    https://snag.gy/as0xHU.jpg

You can see that WordPress clearly thinks 4.3 is the latest version.

Here is the dashboard after I deactivated all plugins and performed the update:

    https://snag.gy/dY9lV6.jpg

You can see that WordPress is now on 4.5.2

As I have no images (with or without plugins activated/deactivated) I’m going to restore to yesterday’s backup.

    Thanks

    Hiya,

Just jumping in as James should be in bed by now 🙂

With this jump, you may in some cases need to rebuild some thumbnails (it’s relating to visual rules in some browsers etc, it’s … weird).

To resolve that, after upgrading run a plugin like https://wordpress.org/plugins/regenerate-thumbnails/ to make sure the necessary image sizes are there for images to show as intended.

Thanks for jumping in, it’s appreciated! 🙂

OK doing a restore didn’t fix the images.
And installing and running Regenerate Thumbnails didn’t fix the images either.

I noticed that even though I did a restore my WordPress version has remained at 4.5.2
I expected it to roll back to 4.3

So I’m still without any images.

BTW this incident has occurred on two of my websites so it’s not peculiar to just one WordPress instance.

Here is a recap of what I’ve done so far:

    • two websites stuck on version 4.3 of WordPress
    • deactivated plugins
    • updated to 4.5.2
    • all images missing
    • deactivated all plugins
    • all images missing
    • restored to last backup
    • all images missing
    • wordpress still on 4.5.2
    • deactivated all plugins
    • installed and ran Regenerated Thumbnails
    • all images missing

Both my websites are using the Enfold theme

I’m going to manually update my theme, as it seems that I’m not the only one experiencing this issue. As detailed here:

    http://www.kriesi.at/support/topic/for-anyone-whos-site-isnt-working-after-4-5-update-missing-images-etc/

I will report back my results shortly.

    Cheers

    OK I fixed it.

    • I installed Twenty Sixteen.
    • I deactivated Enfold.
    • I deleted Enfold.
    • I uploaded the latest version of Enfold.
    • I activated Enfold.
    • All my images are now back!!! 🙂
    • I updated all my plugins.
    • I performed a full backup.

    Phew!!! All sorted.

So it turns out Enfold was the culprit.

    Thanks.
