I installed wordpress multisite exactly as the codex explains. My site (heysmalls.com) is hosted by BlueHost and I created the “*” wildcard domain with no problem. Everything went through without issue, and I was able to add a new site (dev.heysmalls.com). My problem is that when I try to go to the dashboard (dev.heysmalls.com/wp-admin) I get a 500 Internal Server Error.

I have been in contact with multiple people at bluehost, and they seem to think it’s related to my .htaccess file running a loop. I can’t get anyone from there to even suggest a fix.

I copied my .htaccess and wp-config information directly from the wordpress network setup.

Error logs show “Request exceeded the limit of 10 internal redirects due to probable configuration error. Use ‘LimitInternalRecursion’ to increase the limit if necessary. Use ‘LogLevel debug’ to get a backtrace.”

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

  • It’s definitely on Bluehost’s end. There’s plenty of threads here where various people reporting that they sometimes do or do not support the use of wildcard subdomains.

Is the domain you enabled multsite on, the primary domain of that web account?

Yea I figured that. I’m waiting on another response from them, but thought I might as well ask here just in case anyone had any suggestions.

It is the primary domain, though I’ve also tried it on two other sites I host under the same web account, and I’m having the same problem with both of those too.

And if you use subfolders do you get the same?

It doesn’t give me the option to use subfolders

Force it 🙂 If you’ve not created any subsites, go in to your wp-config.php file and edit the define for subdomains to false.

Bluehost ended up rebuilding Apache and it’s fixed! Thank you both for your suggestions!

I am also having the same issue. I have created a few sites under my main domain and one is giving me a 404 error the other giving me the server eroor when I try to access the dash. any help on this would REALLY be appreciated. I also have bluehost and the set up went great as far as I could tell. But it also did not give me option to use subdomains, just xyz.domain.com. REALLY need some help please!

    dlrejc – xyz.domain.com is subdomains.

Please open a new topic. If you have SOME working and some not, it’s different.

No none of them are working. What i was trying to explain is that id i go in and manually change the address to domain.com/xyz instead of xyz.domain.com it gives me a 404 page error. If I use xyz.domain.com it gives me the 500 internal server error

That’s as expected. You can’t have BOTH subdomain and subfolder in Multisite like that.

Please open a NEW topic, though. This one’s marked resolved, y’see, so you don’t get as many people checking it.

Make your own topic, explain what your set up is, what the error is, what you’re TRYING to do, and where (and if) it works.
