    Dear Fellows

Here Swiss-WP User, i hope you understand all my Problems because of my not that perfect english…

So, i have several Sites on my Providers Server. My Maindomain is mrohner.ch and goes to a Subfolder (mrohner.ch/_mrohner) this because i want some “good lookin” Structure for myself if i connect thru ftp.

The most other Domains are in other Subfolders and where pointet from these Domains to the Subfolders (ex. otherdomain.ch -> mrohner.ch/_otherdomain but in the browser you only see otherdomain.ch/subsite)
these other domains are mixed, mostly wordpress but some Joomla or Forum-CMS.

Now i got the Problem that the maintaining of all these Sites is difficult because i need to Login to all the single backends. I thought i could use Multisite, so i have one Ring to rule them all.. ehm Login 😉

    BUT. It just dont work.
I contactet the support of my provider several times but they just cant fix the problem i have.

I installed a new wordpress with multisite under mrohner.ch/_multisite. I pointet some testdomains to this and installed the sites in the multisite network.
    Exactly:
    somedomain.ch pointet to mrohner.ch/_multisite
    subdomain.maindomain.ch pointet to mrohner.ch/_multisite
    (with the sites created)
Wordpress didnt knew what to do and just showed mrohner.ch/_multisite no matter from which domain. (I tried to change the Siteurl or Homeurl aswell.)

So, clever as i am i looked up the internet and it said to me: USE DOMAIN MAPPER!… okay i installed these but clearly it didnt worked because the installation is not in the root of the server. (And here comes the Problem that the maindomain is an other CMS (Joomla).)

I dont need a point by point instruction. Just tell me what i maybe have forgotten or what i can do. Maybe some hints.

Im now thinking of getting a new maindomain who is directly pointet to some subdomain, there i should be able to get Domain Mapper to work. Is this Possible? Because in fact it wouldnt be in the Root of the “server” itself, but should be accessable from newmaindomain.ch even if its on mrohner.ch/_newmaindomain

Of course i already deleted all these multisite testings and backpointet the domains to the original content so the live-sides wont be down for too long.

After this i will collect my experience here and write it down, because in fact i didnt even read my problems and searched a really long time.

You can run WordPress out of a subfolder, HOWEVER if you want your sites to be subdomain.maindomain.ch then you should do this:

    1) Install Multisite in subdomain.maindomain.ch as a subfolder install. This will give you subdomain.maindomain.ch/sitename

    2) MAP additional domains to those folders (so you map sitename.maindomain.ch to subdomain.maindomain.ch/sitename)

That should give you the right results if I understood this correctly.

    Thanks for the answer.

I have tried this but it didnt worked. I think it wasnt a WP-Problem. I will update this Thread.

    So…

i did what Ipstenu was writing but it didnt work because in the backend of my provider i couldnt set a subdomain do another subdomain/path.

now i made a all new multisite
mrohner.ch/_multisite with 2 additional sites mrohner.ch/_multisite/firebirdblog + /zelgli4312 (but there are no folders created for that).

if i create a subdomain for the fb-blog it automatically creates a subfolder in this folder and thats not how wordpress works (the folder remains empty and there is nothing, it was created by the backend of the provider not by WP)

so i tried to make a dns entry by myself (zone firebirdblog.mrohner.ch., ttl 4h, type cname, worth mrohner.ch/_multisite/firebirdblog) but it gets an error and the mailadress of the provider-support 😉

    Any other hints?

If your host won’t let you set a subdomain to another path, then you’re out of luck with this one 🙁 It won’t work because of the host. You have to be able to add, on your host server, the pathing.

    Okay…
It works now, but not with the Joomla-thing

I created a new Domain and installed it there, so the Domain Mapping-Plugin is in the “root”.
