[resolved] WordPress MU Domain Mapping on DreamHost (11 posts)

I've been using WordPress multisite on DreamHosts' VPS package, and all has been working remarkably well.

However, I've run into a problem with the WordPress MU Domain Mapping plugin: http://bit.ly/WPMSDomainMapping

I am trying to map http://sub.domain.org/ to http://newdomain.org/

When I amend the DNS A record of newdomain.org to point at the IP address (as detailed in the plugin instructions) I just get a bad_httpd_conf error (http://wiki.dreamhost.com/Bad_httpd_conf).

DreamHost support have told me that this is because there are multiple sites installed at the VPS unique IP address. But how else is the WPMU Domain Mapping plugin _supposed_ to work?!

I have started to mess with the apache config file though at the moment I'm just getting directory listings :(

Has anyone managed to get WordPress MS domain mapping cracked with DreamHost VPS? Would love to hear a solution!

    tia, Jake

  2. Use the Mirroring function at dreamhost.

Unfortunately it appears as though you can't mirror a wildcard DNS sub-domain using the Dreamhost mirroring function :(

  4. No, you don't mirror the wildcard subdomain. Mirror the domain you want to map. Direct it to go to the main domain, not the sub.

    How foolish of me!!

It works fine now, mirroring it to the main domain.

Also, I'm using the Professional Domain Mapping plugin (which is $25 GPL plugin), as I wanted to control domains from central admin user, and this works fine with this too :)

  6. :D

yeah, I have to add the Dreamhost-specific steps to that manual.

growdigital - the free domain mapping plugin can control domains for all blogs on a site from one page now.

    @donncha: that's good to know, thanks :)

    Great tutorial.

Because Dreamhost doesn’t allow Wildcards, I have my main site (network enabled at course) created sub-directory sites and then I’m using domain mapping to push some of those sites into sub-domains.

Following as many tutorials as possible on domain mapping with dreamhost using mirrored domains, I’ve setup everything correctly, but I’m getting this message from Safari when I visit the site:

can’t open the page “http://maintest.kyleandliz.info/” because Safari can’t find the server “maintest.kyleandliz.info”.

The only thing I can tell is that it is leaving off the “http://” and the ending “/”.

Any ideas why it is failing?

  10. Works for me on Safari - http://maintest.kyleandliz.info loads just fine.

That error is just Safari telling you the URL, don't worry about the http:// prefix :)

    So it does!
I opened it up with Chrome with no issues - just a cache issue with Safari, I suppose.
I'm smarter than that not checking in another browser....
