WordPress MU and Lighttpd (6 posts)

We want to use lighttpd to serve up our images. We have some images that aren't managed by WP media settings or in that location and it works fine.

We wanted to change the settings in the Media Settings subpanel and edit the Uploading Files values. In other instances of WordPress, not MU, we can do this. But in our WPMU 2.7.1 we don't see this subpanel with the Uploading Files options.

    - Is this normal? This function is not available in WPMU 2.7.1?
    - Is there a workaround? There are a few hacks out there in blogs, edit menu.php and such but in our limited investigation they didn't work.
    - Is this configurable in WP 3.0 multi-site?
    - Are there other approaches or best practices in configuring lighttpd for WPMU

FYI - We're stuck on 2.7.1 for a few more months while we do some widget work.

  2. Yes, it's normal not to see it in mu.

I wouldn't hack it, but you can use some plugins to offload images to other sources, and there is some defines in wp-config. they work a LOT better in later versions though.

This is one of my fuzzy grey areas that I haven't done much with. :D

I hope you have a plan to upgrade soon. :)

Someone's going to have to provide the link from the old mu forums as I can;t copy and paste today but you need to be running at least version 1.5 of lighttpd which is not the one that normally comes down and gets installed when you do a apt-get. The flash file uploader will not work on wp/wpmu with version 1.4.

At least last time I knew. There's even code within wp/wpmu saying so I believe.

Excuse typos. I;m not feeling good today.

edit: It's thread 12759 if someone can write up a link.

Thanks Andrea for the tips on plugins. Checking those out now.

And yes we have it on the roadmap to upgrade. We're doing a rewrite of our core theme that we host 170 or so sites on, then on the widget work. There were some custom things we've done that need to be re-done and site by site work to complete the upgrade. A multi-month project but we'll get there...

    Here's what I found - any others??

I found 12759 but that was really old and on another topic. But maybe I'm missing something.

    Thanks for the help,
