Yeah I tried that, but then it wanted a username and password. I followed the instructions multiple times on codex (http://codex.wordpress.org/Resetting_Your_Password) and still couldn’t get it to let me in.
Whether I attempt to login or reset via email I get this message
Not Found
The requested URL /wp-admin/wp-login.php was not found on this server.
If I create a new database and change the wp-config file then I get the this screen,
“Welcome to the famous five minute WordPress installation process! You may want to browse the ReadMe documentation at your leisure. Otherwise, just fill in the information below and you’ll be on your way to using the most extendable and powerful personal publishing platform in the world.”
However, I need to access this old database to retrieve some posts.
Did you actually install WordPress on your local server? If so, where – in relation to the web root?
When I try to go here http://localhost/wp-admin/install.php it tells me
Already Installed
You appear to have already installed WordPress. To reinstall please clear your old database tables first.
It gives me the link to login, but I don’t know the password and trying to reset it has failed multiple times.
It is installed in the www folder of wamp.
I can get to this page now to login
http://localhost/wp-login.php
but I can’t reset it. I did try that first link and followed the instructions multiple times.
Does it matter what the username and password are in the wp-config file?
What should they be there if I change the password using phpmyadmin?

They are your database access details. Leave them alone. They have nothing to do with your login details.
Hi BrianBam,
I think you download this wordpress files from your online site.
May I know that if you download this wordpress website from your online hosting? If this is yes then you have to make changes on database. If this is yes then let me know I’ll provide you the proper solution.
I downloaded them from from online hosting using phpmyadmin
I’ve read that post but still have some problems.
You have to make changes on database.
You need explorer the database which you create at your local host. Find the table having name wp_options. you’ll found the row with option name “siteurl” change its value that is something like this http://localhost/yourfoldername to your domain. Repeat the same with option name “home”.
Now you are ready to go.
all the best.
I’ve tried that and now i’m just going to have someone else fix it for me. thx
