I noticed a problem the other dray after getting a message from a few of my subscribers. they told me that wp was not letting them post their articles.

I took a look and althouh it was letting me make new posts of aa few lines...if the post had say more than 10 lines of txt it was truncating it.

Only a small portion of the post would appear. even though it was all there in the editor.

Furthermore when trying to edit the files the posts woouldn't update taking me to wp-admin/post.php and just showing a blank page...and no update to the blog.

I have disabled all plugins and reinstalled wp...but its still the same?????

    Ideas on a postcard?

  2. Are you using the_excerpt() instead of the_content() in your theme?

hmm dunno otto..where would I look to know?

  4. Well, since I did say "in your theme", then I would expect you start there.

The theme controls what your page looks like and what the output of it is. You have to go to the theme's code to control what's on the page.

It might also help people if you gave more information. Like, what's your web site's URL, or what is the theme that you are using? Things like that make a difference.

I deleted all wordpress files and then uploaded again. all the back end is there but the homepage has disappeared now. Just tried making a post through the dash board truncation seems to be fixed...but how do i get my homepage back.

    Theme is called Simplex.

    Thanks

There's absolutely nothing being displayed on your site at the moment. Perhaps you didn't upload all of the WordPress files? Assuming that you have Admin access, have you tried switching to the default theme?

Ok I have gotten the site working again..but the posts are still truncating!! Someone must have some kind of idea....However I just dont know how to ask for specific help because I don't know where to look.

All I can tell you is that it was letting me make new posts of a few lines...if the post had say more than 10 lines of txt it was truncating it.

Only a small portion of the post would appear. even though it was all there in the editor.

Furthermore when trying to edit the files the posts wouldn't update..it was taking me to wp-admin/post.php and just showing a blank page...and when i refreshed...no update to the blog.

  10. I don't know why you're getting a blank page when you edit and refesh, but clear your cache to begin with.

To fix the truncated posts on your site, edit index.php in WP admin/appearance/editor. Replace the_excerpt() with the_content()

With regard to the truncated posts, can you place a copy of your theme's index.php file into the WordPress pastebin and post the pastebin link here?

The blank page when editing is probably unrelated and could be theme-specific or caused by a plugin. You could try:

    - deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    - switching to the default theme to rule out any theme-related problems.

Ok I did that...something weird going n for sure

I copy and pasted a whoole article and posted it using the default theme...it worked fine..all plugins disabled. then i did the same using simplex theme...same theme i have always used...and it truncates.

here is the php pastebin file.

As otto42 already suggested, you are using the_excerpt not the_content.

Ok it just got weirder.....here is the problem.

If I write a post into the text box it shows it fine....I can write very large posts using copy and past...
    eg http://www.blackpresence.co.uk/2009/09/blah/

however if I copy and past even one paragraph from a word document into the text box it will not update ...it times out.

Don't paste content from Microsoft Word into WordPress as the pasted text will also contain Word's own formatting. Sooner or later, this formatting will stop your pages from being displayed correctly (if at all) in Internet Explorer. If you cannot possibly manage without Word, paste your text into NotePad (or another text editor) first, then copy from NotePad into WordPress.

I have already tried this...i thought of it long ago sorry.

I am now having mixed results....after having pasted the whole article into notepad...then copying it from notepad into word press and having NO JOY.

I started copying each paragraph one by one...It just allowed me to add 6 paragraphs by copy and paste...I'm gonna keep going and see if i can get the whole article in there. or if it is a particular paragraph/word or specific word count thats causing the problem.

Is it possible that there are just SOME words wordpress doesnt like???

the paragraph below seems to be the one that my site wont allow. It has however allowed numbers 19 -24 all of a similar size. I cant for the life of me understand what's goin on here

    18. The First World War 1914-1918 saw a significant number of Africans arrived in Britain to fight. The second and larger wave of Afro-Caribbean’s arrived in Britain during the course of the Second World War 1939-1945. In all, several thousand workers migrated as volunteers fight in the RAF and other branches of the armed forces, and to serve as military technicians. Many others were also recruited by Britain to work in its Merseyside munitions plants.

Have you tried just typing that paragraph in?

Yes ...it works fine. That said...its not ideal to not have copy and paste, is it?

hmmm it might be special characters it doesnt like....because it repleatedly rejevcted a post with umlauts in , as soon as I removed them it accepted it. Also it just recected a paragraph with £'symbols in it...when removed..it accpted the paragraph no prob.

    Any ideas?

it aint that though...could it be some kind of restriction of the space in the database or hosting?

    it aint that though

    How do you know?

could it be some kind of restriction of the space in the database...

Not likely. Not unless your post is longer than something like 4 trillion characters.

    ... or hosting?

Slightly more plausible-- 'The effective maximum length of LONGTEXT columns also depends on the configured maximum packet size in the client/server protocol and available memory.'-- but unless your post is the size of, say, the Bible, get a new host. Memory limits should not effect any reasonably sized post. I've inserted the equivalent of eight typed pages, no problem.
