Hi, after a day of trying to get to figure out why I cannot access my wp-admin or back up my site, my host (bluehost) informed that the IP address used by my ISP, Telefonica, is blocked by several sites due to spam problems. CS at blue host has told me to contact Telefonica to get the site white listed, but I haven’t been able to get anywhere with them. Is there another solution to this problem?

    problematic IP: 66.147.244.228

I’ve whitelisted it on MySQL but that hasn’t been helpful.

  • You need to contact your ISP. Typically, though if an IP is flagged for Spam it does not block the IP from web traffic only email traffic. If this is the case, it would be bluehost blocking the http traffic from your IP address. Blacklisting an IP due to spam, would not typically affect HTTP traffic.

Can you visit your website? If you can visit your website but just not the admin dashboard, it’s doubtful it’s related to a blacklist.

Are you getting an error message? Can you provide us with a link to your site?

Sorry about leaving off my site: squareyed.se

I cannot access my site. I do not get an error message, it just times out on oth my wp.admin and when i try to visit the site.

Also, as stated before I HAVE contacted my ISP but the server IP in question is still blacklisted, at least as far as I can tell because I still have no access to my site nor my wp-admin page. Thanks.

I have both pinged and ran a traceroute to your website and got a response both times.

Your site loads a blank page when I visit it. I doubt this is blacklisting of any kind. When I try to load your wp-admin, it loads without an issue. This does not sounds like what BlueHost is describing.

If your ISP were blocking traffic for your IP it would be on a SPAM blacklist and not block all traffic to the IP. If this were the case, and your server is blacklisted only SMTP traffic would be blocked.

I’m getting a blank white screen when I try to access your site.

Try enabling errors in your php.ini and see if any errors are produced.
    Change:
    display_errors = Off
    to:
    display_errors = On

Also try changing your theme to the twentyten or twentyeleven theme.

I changed my theme, disabled all my plugins, whitelisted all known IPs that I use, cleared cache on all browsers i’ve tried using (chrome, FF, safari), changed my own IP, and disabled firewalls. The other stuff on the Login Trouble checklist is a little beyond my experience (obviously).

A friend who is also helping me out right now *can* access my wp-admin page *and* log in successfully and navigate with no problems around in there. He can’t access the site through the address though.

I don’t know how to enable errors in my php.ini so I’m working on how to figure that out right now.

Since we’ve narrowed it down to not an ISP problem, is there any other advice anyone can give me?

I think this is an ISP problem. You cannot whitelist the IP. Your ISP have to sort it out at their end. It’s their server that is being blocked/blacklisted.

To clarify for the next person who asks – WordPress can’t block your IP like that anyway. Even if you added in the IP, it would only block you from commenting 😉

What’s your domain name, if I may ask?

my host (bluehost) informed that the IP address used by my ISP, Telefonica, is blocked by several sites due to spam problems

Just for the record, again, that means your PERSONAL IP, i.e. the one your ISP gives you, is blocked. If you go to http://www.whatismyip.com/ then you’ll see what YOUR IP is. I believe, if I understand this all correctly, THAT is the IP that’s being blocked. It’s not that WordPress is blocking your SEVER’S IP (i.e. the IP that relates to yourdomain.com), it’s that your host is blocking your personal IP.

I checked http://www.spamhaus.org/query/bl?ip=66.147.244.228 and that IP is definitely not being blocked. Is that your domain’s IP or yours?

My server’s IP, according to blue host, is the one with the problem 66.147.244.228–that’s why they referred me to my ISP. Sorry for any confusion.

My site as listed above is squareyed.se–not working for anyone at all. wp-admin login seems to be working for any other IP aside from my home IP (different than the one listed above).

One place I tested out the wp-admin login was another IP that uses the same ISP in another part of time about 3km away from my house, if anyone finds that curious.

    When I run a traceroute, I get a timeout.

Also, it’s NOT an ISP problem if my entire site is down, no?

Okay, that probably means your home IP is on a blacklist.

    So we have two problems!

    1) Your domain’s not working
    2) Your ISP is a moron and got blacklisted (I’m familiar with Telefonica, this happens to them often enough)

To fix your HOME access, you need Telefonica to get you a new IP. You should be able to do this by rebooting your modem (or unplugging it and plugging it in).

Your domain problems though may be bluehost…

When I run a trace to your domain (or your IP, same results) it hangs http://network-tools.com/default.asp?prog=trace&host=squareyed.se

The IP resolves to http://box728.bluehost.com/ which DOES NOT load, but http://box729.bluehost.com/ does.

I checked WHOIS (via http://whois.marcaria.com/domain-whois/Europe/Sweden-domain-SE/ ) and it just points back to bluehost, so I would tell bluehost this:

“Since my personal IP was blocked, I went to another location and tried to access my site and was unable to do so. Looking at the following tracerouts:

    http://network-tools.com/default.asp?prog=trace&host=squareyed.se
    http://network-tools.com/default.asp?prog=trace&host=66.147.244.228

It appears the IP allocated to my host, box728.bluehost.com, is not working correctly. Can you move my account to a different host box/IP?”

    …sigh…

thanks for everybody’s help! i’ve sent two tickets to bluehost, and telefonica…will have to wait till tomorrow. i changed my personal IP this morning but i’ll leave everything unplugged all night tonight and try my luck tomorrow.

just for information, sending a ticket to blue host with the quoted text from Ipstenu and changing my IP address seems to have resolved all problems. Thanks again for everyone’s help.

    Huzzah!

Do keep pestering your ISP, though. If they’re getting blacklisted, this could happen again.
