I’m trying to import a wordpress.com blog to a self-hosted site, but the import keeps timing out or I get a “can’t connect to host” message). I’ve broken the imports into the smallest files I can (month by month), and I’ve tried changing the PHP settings on my host, but no luck.

I’m sure the issue is on my host’s side, but I have no idea what I should ask them to try to fix this. Any suggestions? (or any other tips I can try?)

If it helps, the operation always times out after 25000 milliseconds.

    Thanks!

In case anyone else runs into this problem, here’s a word of advice: disable whatever plugins you don’t need when importing. d’oh!

I found this: http://nick-hoffman.blogspot.com/2009/09/importing-large-wordpress-blogs.html but wasn’t sure where to edit the php.ini on a godaddy hosted site.

What’s working for me right now is to just keep refreshing the page. It seems to be uploading like 8 assets at a time. I can tell because the list that says “Media “DSCN0372” already exists.” gets a little longer each time. Far from perfect but after some frustration trying other things I’ll take it.
