  • Hello,

I have a photography blog. The images I use are usually 1280 pixels. I create the images I will use in my blog posts, with the long edge of Photoshop being 1280 pixels, then uploading them to wordpress. In special cases, I also upload images larger or smaller than this.

    WordPress media settings as follows:

    Thumbnail: Width = 0 / Height = 0
    Medium size: Max Width = 345 / Max Height = 999
    Large size: Max Width = 696 / Max Height = 999

In this case, for every photo I upload to WordPress at 1280 pixels, 3 files of 1280 pixels, 345 and 696 pixels are uploaded. Which means it takes up more disk space.

    Questions:

Question 1: If I set the WordPress media settings as follows, will the unnecessary photos be prevented from uploading?

Question 2: If the settings are as follows, would it be a problem for the default photos of my articles to appear in blocks and lists on pages?

    Settings I want to change:

    Thumbnail: Width = 0 / Height = 0
    Medium size: Max Width = 0 / Max Height = 0
    Large size: Max Width = 0 / Max Height = 0

If I have been able to explain my problem correctly, is there any other way you can suggest to me?

Thanks in advance for your interest and help.
    Regards.

  • I think you might be making a mess by using zeroes.
This ticket added another default image size: https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/43524
and in WP 5.3, there is handling for images that are larger than the threshold “large image” size (arbitrarily set at 2560px). There is another ticket to remove the image size options entirely, but WP would still be making multiple copies of the file of different sizes to satisfy the various devices visitors use and what the theme indicates is needed.

The sizes are used to decrease the bandwidth used for visitors, instead of always loading a huge image (often larger than the device’s viewport size).

Edit: you would be better off setting all three sizes at your largest size, instead of all three at zero.

    Hi Joy,

    Thank you for the answer.

So, since my most common size is 1280 pixels, would it be right to adjust the media settings as follows?

    Thumbnail: Width = 1280 / Height = 999
    Medium size: Max Width = 1280 / Max Height = 999
    Large size: Max Width = 1280 / Max Height = 999

    Regards.

You could try that. I think it’s better than using all zeroes. But your theme might define some other sizes.
